Asia Trip Connects Cornell with Alumni and Partners

Provost Michael Kotlikoff and Vice Provost of International Affairs Wendy Wolford visited Asia in early February. The trip included visits to Taipei, Hanoi, and Hong Kong, where they met with institutional partners and alumni.

Taipei

The provost and vice provost's visit began in Taiwan. They visited with members of the Ministry of Education and colleagues at the National Taiwan University, where Cornell has 66 alumni on faculty and several research collaborations. While in Taipei, they also met with Cornell alumni, including President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen '80. The Cornell Alumni Association of Taiwan hosted an alumni reception. More than 70 alumni attended, and Wolford announced the Charles, Amy, and the Tsai Family Scholarship.

Hanoi

The time in Hanoi included visiting VinUniversity, where Kotlikoff presented a public lecture titled Harnessing Innovation to Solve Big Problems. The provost and vice provost also met with faculty and administration to discuss continued opportunities for collaboration between the universities. In 2017 Cornell's SC Johnson College of Business entered into a six-year consulting contract with the VinGroup to support its aspiration to form a new private university in Vietnam—VinUniversity. While in Hanoi, the provost and vice provost attended an alumni reception and dinner organized by the Cornellians in Vietnam club.

Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the team spent time at Cornell Global Hubs partner Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The Hubs collaboration was formalized at a signing ceremony between Wolford and Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement at HKUST. During their time on campus they met with Cornell PhD graduates and faculty awardees of the Cornell-HKUST Global Strategic Collaboration Award. An evening reception with more than 50 alumni was hosted by the Cornell Club of Hong Kong, followed the next day by a talk Kotlikoff gave as part of CityU's Distinguished Lecture Series.
