Deepening Existing Collaborations

Cornell-Sydney Joint Research Seed Grant Awards 2024

Genomic Surveillance and Diagnosis of Australian Cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis Through Next-Generation Sequencing Approaches

Gary Whittaker (Cornell) and Kate Worthing (USYD)

The project aims to improve surveillance and diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal disease in cats caused by feline coronavirus. The collaboration will complement existing efforts at Cornell by establishing a next-generation sequencing (NGS) core facility in the Southern Hemisphere at the Veterinary Pathology and Diagnostic Services Laboratory. This work will enhance global capacity to monitor and understand coronaviruses in companion animals, with potential applications to wildlife species.

Other ongoing projects explore health communication, sustainability, and policy impact.

Student Experiences

Hub partnerships have enriched students' academic and pre-professional experiences and expanded their opportunities to engage inside and outside the classroom.

I worked as a business and marketing intern at Rufus & Coco, an Australian-owned lifestyle pet brand. It was a life-changing chance to explore marketing in a real-life setting.

— Allison Lee '25, CALS Global Fellow

Seven Cornell colleges have sent students to study at USYD: Agriculture and Life Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Architecture, Art, and Planning; Cornell Engineering; Human Ecology; ILR School; and SC Johnson.

Seeing how another country is tackling environmental problems and how citizens are engaging in sustainability reinvigorated my passion for environmental studies. It has influenced how I want to continue my future studies and career with a more international approach.

— Hadley Flanagan '26, Global Intern

Hadley worked on a community composting project, turning public benches into hidden compost systems.

Faculty Visit: Jeff Niederdeppe

Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Communication, Brooks School

In June, Jeff Niederdeppe visited USYD to explore research collaborations. He met with the Sydney Policy Lab, Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, Sydney Environment Institute, and Charles Perkins Center.

Niederdeppe and USYD's Olaf Werder co-lead a joint seed grant project focusing on communication's role in advancing health equity.

Over 70 undergraduates learned career-shaping lessons in the field last summer with support from Global Internships and the Laidlaw Scholars Program. Hear more about their experiences at the Nov. 19 Global Cornell Experience Showcase
